How Entrepreneurs Can Safeguard Their Internet Use
The number of people who earn their livelihoods online is
absolutely staggering. The internet has opened up enormous opportunities for
aspiring entrepreneurs, and it has freed many people to create the businesses
they have always dreamed of. We hear about this every time some internet start
up sells for millions of dollars, but for every story like that, there are
millions of other online workers who are simply making a good living in
private - not striking it rich, but running their own businesses and doing well
for themselves.
And though this is a wonderful trend, it does pose some
significant challenges, not least among them being the difficulty of guarding
these entrepreneurs’ online information. At the same time that online
businesses have proliferated, so has the number of people committing online
fraud and cyber theft. That means that it is vital for internet entrepreneurs
to take steps that will safeguard their online data.
Step One: Use Anti-Virus Software
The easiest way for cyber criminals to steal information is
by installing malware on computers, and then using that malware to harvest vast
amounts of information about their victims. Malware on your computer can send
thieves your passwords, credit card information, social security number, and
many other important bits of information about you. The same goes for some
viruses that infect computers.
To prevent that from happening, you should always have
up-to-date anti-virus software on your computer. Such software won’t catch
everything, but it will catch the most widespread viruses and malware, and
scrub them from your hard drive before they can do real damage.
Step Two: Use a VPN
Just like anti-virus software protects information on your
computer, a VPN will protect information when it leaves your computer. For
instance, if you send sensitive tax documents or private information about a
client, your VPNservice will encrypt it so that viruses, malware, and third-party
snoopers cannot intercept it and then exploit it for their own purposes.
This is more important than many entrepreneurs realize. If
you are an entrepreneur and your computer isn’t properly secured, it’s not only
your information that is in jeopardy. Private information about your clients
and business partners is in danger, as well. So protect yourself and all those
you do business with. Get anti-virus software and a VPN service, and make sure
that all of your computer activity is safe from internet criminals.
